A Simple Link Maintenance Checklist

Links are easy to create and easy to forget. A regular review keeps your shared addresses useful, protects visitors from broken destinations, and gives your organization a clearer picture of what is still active.

Review high-visibility links first

Begin with links in social profiles, email signatures, printed material, advertisements, and prominent website pages. These links have the greatest chance of being clicked by new visitors, so a broken or outdated destination has an outsized effect.

Check the destination experience

Open each important short link on a phone and a desktop browser. Verify that it uses HTTPS, loads without obvious errors, and leads to the expected page. Check that forms, downloads, and key calls to action still work.

Confirm the message matches

Compare the text used beside the link with the current destination. If a post promises a report, the link should still open that report or a clearly explained replacement. Update descriptions when a page changes significantly.

Retire what no longer belongs

Disable links that point to discontinued offers, expired events, or content you no longer support. If a replacement exists, publish it clearly rather than silently redirecting visitors to an unrelated page.

Assign an owner

Every important campaign or shared collection should have a responsible person or team. Record the purpose, destination, creation date, and review date. A simple spreadsheet or link-management workspace is enough for many teams.

Routine maintenance is a small investment that keeps links trustworthy. Visitors notice when a link works exactly as promised.
